Give Me Proper Cues: Reasonable Attention-Guiding Means Better Text-Diagram Integration in Multimedia Learning.[pdf]
May 2016
Skill
Eye tracking, English expression, Eye movement Data analysis
Goal
Whether Visual cues benefit on learners in guiding learners’ attention to specific locations during multimedia learning.

Design
Using eye-tracking method Tobii 60, two parallel experiments were conducted to examine to what extent reasonability of presentation of visual cues and auditory cues in space dimension as well as in time dimension influenced students’ learning outcomes.

Results
As a result, cueing facilitates text-diagram integration through guiding attention. Visual and auditory cues that are matched spatially facilitate attention-guiding and text-diagram integration. Visual and auditory cues that are synchronized facilitate attention-guiding, and text-diagram integration.

My contribution
-
I worked as experimenter and poster speaker. I was responsible to regulate participants and eye tracking device during the experiments. I explained the results by referring to different eye movements index in psychological perspectives.
-
I not only watched the latest research of eye movement technology in various fields, but also I, worked as a participant, shared the research of eye tracking in English with others in CICEM.
-
I obtained others' questions and argued with them. I realized that a good research should require rigorous experimental design, solid theory, and broad discussion of results and peer reviews.
-
It is a good chance for me to broaden my academic thinking methods.
The more total cognitive load is reduced by cues, the better retention and transfer of multimedia learning:
A meta-analysis and two meta-regression analyses.[pdf]

Skills
Meta-analysis, English paper writing, Multimedia learning, Literature review, Critical thinking

Goal
1.Whether Cues facilitate retention and transfer during multimedia learning.
2.Is there the direct connections between the cue-related cognitive load and learning outcomes.
Design
Literature review and filter data.
A meta-analysis and two subsequent meta-regression analyses

Results
In line with cognitive load theory(CLT), cueing has a positive effect on learning outcomes because of the reduction in total cognitive load and avoidance of cognitive overload.
Adding cues in multimedia materials can indeed reduce Subjective total cognitive load(SCL) and promote learning outcomes, and the more SCL is reduced by cues, the better retention and transfer of multimedia learning.

My contribution
-
I wrote one third of the paper and familiarized with the process of submitting paper.
-
I acquired the ability to solve the tricky questions from reviewers based on our discussion.
-
I obtained the broader use of meta-analysis especially meta-regression analysis.

By using computers as interactive teaching devices, and orchestrating the allocation of students and mediating resources according to the unique needs of each learner, students can acquire more knowledge. —— From Wikipedia
Skill
Statistic Programming on R, Application of information technology on education—— from Matlab software

The concept of adaptive learning in my mind was abstract until I went to the class named Application of information technology on education and Programming of statistical models of measurement.
To be specific, by comparing Ordering Theory(OT, see fig.2) with Item Relationship Structure analysis(IRS) on Matlab, I utilized the real test scores to evaluate the evaluation accuracy of student knowledge structure in those two theories. And by using Bilog program, I analyzed the test responses in terms of parameter normal model and parameter logistic model.

My contribution
-
I obtain an understanding of the current impact of information technology and technology on education by listening various professor's lectures and essay discussions in the class. Based on those scientific theories and processes, I learn how to assess the difficulty of items and measurement of student’s abilities.
-
Meanwhile, I equip myself with the ability to use information technology to analyze educational materials. I become to realize the importance of adaptive learning in the future education.
